The Gemini app connects to remote MCP servers as custom connected apps, inside Gemini Spark.
Check these first. Custom apps are hidden, not disabled, when any of these is unmet, and Gemini does not say which one you are missing.
  • A personal Google account. A work or school (Workspace) account shows Connected Apps but never the Custom apps section.
  • Google AI Pro or Ultra. A free account has no Connected Apps entry at all, and AI Plus does not add one.
  • Spark, not Chat. The section only appears after you switch modes in the sidebar.
Using the Gemini CLI instead? That has no such requirements. See Gemini CLI.

Add the connected app

1

Switch to Spark

In the Gemini sidebar, switch the toggle from Chat to Spark, then open Connected Apps.
2

Enter the server

Scroll to Custom apps, paste the MCP server URL, and click Next:
Click through the defaults. The OAuth Client ID and Client secret fields stay blank; ContentHero registers itself.
3

Authorize

Accept the risk notice, then Connect. Gemini sends you to ContentHero to approve. Sign in if you are not already, then click Authorize. No API key needed.
4

Save

Gemini shows the connection named ContentHero with its available actions. Click Connect to save it.

Verify

In a Spark task with the app enabled, ask Gemini to read your ContentHero balance. It calls get_account and returns your credits.
Generated media appears as links, not inline. Gemini runs every ContentHero tool and saves results to your library, but it does not render the generation card that Claude and ChatGPT show. Gemini may still describe a “widget” or “media viewer” in its reply; that is the model narrating, not something on your screen. Open the links, or your ContentHero library, to see the results.
